That reminds me of my university a bit. They do have dormitories on campus, but the students who don’t live in them are always very short on time and don’t get enough sleep, so there are a lot of people sleeping everywhere… Both students and professors.

This sort of thing also happens in Singapore. I saw a woman standing in the train station just fall flat backwards and crack her head on the ground with a loud thud. No one went up to help her. Yep, I also just stood there watching.
seen this many times but I always got the JR or Metro staff to help. Although this is not always the right thing to do. the staff and everybody stood around a woman a long time until somebody was choosen to call an ambulance.
…and after a late night out, he decided to take a nap.

– That’s a summery of most of Shozin Fukui’s films right there! Don’t know if you’ve seen this director’s movies Masa? ‘964 Pinnochio’ is one… His earlier short films are mostly of people acting weird in public… in one a guy with zombie face paint falls over in the subway station and people ignore him. Another short is basically just a crazy girl vomiting and attacking salarymen in the street!
You couldn’t really make such films here in the UK, as pretty much everyone would be acting like that on a friday night in most towns.

I’ve never been to Japan, but my brother lived and worked there for many years. He said the Japs are cool – when you go to a nite club there is no aggro, you can relax, everyone is cool. The only obnoxious people he came across were other foreigners. He said the party scene rocked -banged alot of chicks there – Japanese, Korean, african, south american, chinease, even australian! I’d love to go there someday.
My Grandfather was shot in the leg by the Japs fighting in PNG, most of his battalion were killed, so he hated the Japs. But we have to let the past go, nearly all those people are dead now. Young Japanese are heaps cool today. I see them here on the Gold Coast in Queensland, with their dark tans and long hair, driving shity old cars with surfboards on the roof – good luck to them!!!

Here in Finland, people are “cool” too. It’s a cold country, after all. If you pass out, people will try to ignore you because everyone else does and because it’s none of their business. If they call help, it’ll be the police to pick you up, not the ambulance.

the same thing in poland. When I was getting back from concert in nearby city there were 3 old drukners laying on the ground (huh, after a little while fourth came:P). One of them stinked worse than the trash can which was nearby. It’s so sad… I wonder sometimes whose fault is it that they ended like that… nevertheless someone should help them, but now thats the problem, who? Someone can say that it’s their own fault, and probably not once it’s true. But what about the rest? masa, you’re wrong, jap are not cool, humans are cool. jap r even less cool a little, here the cell would disappear in a jiffy as well, amazing.

Very nice story. Japanese are either “cool” (if the case is that this man was voluntarily “sleeping one off”) or the Japanese are “too cool” (if the case is that this young man was dying and in need of help).
In America, we often react in the extreme.
Americans react totally “un-cool” or “lame” by enforcing the law on a sleeping man. The Law says no loitering, trespassing, soliciting, no public drunkenness, no obstruction of fire exit, (if the guy lost his wallet) failure to provide identification. The Law states that the state must pay for shelter, pay for detox (rehab), pay to ensure sleeping man takes drug tests and searches for employment. Law requires sleeping man to pay fines and attend classes. In USA, hobo (person that sleeps in public) hides from society.
Or, on the other extreme, Americans react “wicked cool” or “sick cool” by taking the law into their own hands. “Sick cool” Americans would step on him, kick him, and take his cell phone. If they could get away with it, “sick cool“ Americans would piss on or burn a sleeping man. If you burn a hobo, they most likely would not sleep in “your” public area again.
America would not let this kid sleep. A good American would help this kid, a typical American would inform a cop / employee about the sleeping man. Most Americans are too cool to help someone themselves.
There are many meanings to “cool“. Cool is letting a rich kid sleep on off on the train station floor. Cool is not hurting or stealing from a sleeping person. Cool is not caring that a person sleeps in public.
The ultimate cool is reflecting on why we have situations like the ones documented at masamania- why homeless, why we have mental illness, why we have poverty, why we care about stuff. Why we look away. Why society looks away.
I would not have taken this man’s cell phone. I would not have stepped on or intentionally hurt this man. I would not have asked this man if he required my assistance. I would not have informed the authorities.
